Rep. Eric Cantor to visit Randolph-Macon

U.S. House of Representatives Majority Leader Eric Cantor will speak on Monday, March 28 at the Blackwell Auditorium at Randolph-Macon College.  He will be speaking as part of the Legislative Leaders Series, which invites leaders to campus to discuss current events.  The event is free and open to the public but attendees must first request a ticket here.

Hanover County youth service council taking applications

The Hanover Youth Service Council is accepting applications from middle and high school students interested in creating change, serving the community and inspiring others through volunteerism.

HYSC is a youth-led countywide organization that consists of up to 35 middle and high school students selected for their dedication to service and leadership. Any seventh- through 12th-grader who lives in Hanover County and/or attends a Hanover school is eligible to apply.

This year, the council is recruiting only for four available membership openings.

Applications are available in the guidance departments of all Hanover County middle and high schools, by contacting the Hanover Department of Community Resources at (804) 365-4300 or by visiting www.co.hanover.va.us/commres/default.htm to download the application. The deadline for submitting applications is April 15 at 5 p.m.

Health status varies across state Virginia health statistics

In an article from the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Virginia ranks as the 22nd healthiest state based on a variety of health behaviors, health policies and health outcomes, including cancer deaths and days of poor physical and mental health, according to the 2010 edition of America's Health Rankings.

The state has going for it a low overall rate of violent crime, ready access to prenatal care and a low percentage of children living in poverty, according to the 2010 edition of the Virginia Department of Health's Division of Chronic Disease Prevention and Control rankings, a project of the United Health Foundation, the American Public Health Association and the Partnership for Prevention.

R-MC to Host Writer Cathryn Hankla

On Tuesday, March 29, 2011, Randolph-Macon College will host award-winning writer Cathryn Hankla as she offers a reading of her poetry and prose, including selections from her newly published volume of short stories, Miracle Fish. The reading and discussion will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Washington Room of Washington and Franklin Hall. This event is free and open to the public.

Hankla will offer insights into her work and the writing process. She directs the Jackson Center for Creative Writing at Hollins University and serves as Poetry Editor for The Hollins Critic. The Virginia native has published some dozen books in multiple genres, including novels, short story collections, and poetry. Her work has been recognized by the Academy of American Poets, PEN, and the Virginia Commission for the Arts.

Randolph-Macon College will host U.S. House of Representatives Majority Leader Eric Cantor on Monday, March 28, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. The event will be held in Blackwell Auditorium, R-MC’s Center for the Performing Arts. It is free and open to the public with a required general admission ticket for each attendee.


Randolph-Macon College launched the Legislative Leaders Series as part of its mission to develop the minds and character of our students. The college is committed to inviting leaders of varied perspectives on campus to share their views on important current events.

People using social media to help find Taylor Anderson

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – They may not be able to physically go to Japan to find a missing 24-year-old Chesterfield woman, but people in Richmond are using every opportunity to spread the word. 

In fact, one woman is using social media to search for clues about Taylor Anderson who was last seen after the earthquake but before the tsunami.

Online posts concerning Taylor Anderson are on Twitter and Facebook.  People from all over the world are reaching out to folks right here in Richmond with contact information for Japan and government agencies who may be able to help search for Taylor who went missing about 50 miles north of Sendai, ground zero of the quake.

Redistricting meetings coming up

The County has scheduled three Public Information Sessions to solicit input on the redistricting process.

These Sessions, which will run from 7:00pm-8:30pm, are scheduled for Patrick Henry High School on Tuesday March 29, Atlee High School on Thursday March 31, and Lee Davis High School on Tuesday April 5. The Sessions will be in the Commons Area of the schools.

No formal presentation will be given. Displays and maps will be set up at stations for review in an open format with County staff available to answer questions.
